This is because the moment you drive off the car lot your car will lose value (and in the case of a new car it will lose a lot of value). Having the down payment protects the dealer in case you default on your loan and they have to reposses and the re-sale your vehicle. However, with such a downpayment you are not only going to get the loan but you may also get a better rate on it.
